What if SCOOP earned a penny every time you searched the Internet? Well, we can!

GoodSearch.com is a new search engine that donates half its revenue, about a penny per search, to the charities its users designate. You use it just as you would any search engine, and it's powered by Yahoo!, so you get great results.

Just go to www.goodsearch.com and be sure to enter SCOOP ( Stanly County One on One Program) as the charity you want to support. Just 500 of us searching four times a day will raise about $7300 in a year without anyone spending a dime! And, be sure to spread the word!

SCOOP is the Stanly County One on One Program, an affiliate of the North Carolina Governor’s One-on-One Program, under the Department of Juvenile Justice. SCOOP has existed since 1992  and provides over 1000 hours of mentoring to Stanly County youth each year.

SCOOP recruits and trains volunteers to be mentors to young people in our community who need a positive role model in their lives.

The goals of SCOOP are to help keep the young people in school and out of trouble. Often, a young person simply needs some one-on-one time with a caring adult who enjoys spending time with them.

That’s where you come in.

You can make a small gift of your time – only two hours a week – that goes a long, long way toward helping a child to believe in himself and to make good choices in life. It’s easy and fun!

You don’t have to free up two hours in your week, either: you can simply include the child in some activities you are going to be doing anyway! Read more inside.

SCOOP is a member of the Stanly County United Way .

 SCOOP at a glance:

SCOOP is about our gifts.  Each of us is born into the world with unique gifts and talents, a light within. You can share your light with others and help illuminate the world.  SCOOP can provide that opportunity in a unique and special way.

How will my gifts fit in?

When you volunteer, you will meet with a SCOOP professional to discuss the gifts you have to give and the kind of young person that will make a good match for you.

You will then receive brief but thorough training to prepare you for your new sharing role.

SCOOP will then introduce you to your match and will help you get started on your new friendship.

For people who are interested in helping SCOOP in some way other than serving as a mentor, we have a Wish List. Click here to take a look at our Wish List.

Friends of SCOOP is simply a list of people who are interested in helping SCOOP in some way other than serving as a mentor. They have other gifts to give and want to share their "light" with SCOOP in a different way.

Friends of SCOOP is a listserve of people who are interested in keeping informed about SCOOP activities. The Director will send out email notice to the Friends of SCOOP to notify them of upcoming events, activities, and needs. When you see a need that you are interested in, you simply reply to the email and let us know what you are interested in doing. There will be no pressure, simply notice of events and needs. You can share this information with any groups you are involved in who may be looking for community service projects. We will NOT share your email with anyone.

To be added to the listserve for Friends of SCOOP, please click here to email. Note in the subject line "add to Friends of SCOOP".

We have a Wish List if you would like to review it to see if there are any "wishes" you can grant now. Click here to review current Wish List.

Okay, so I’ve decided to be a SCOOP volunteer.  How do I know I can help?  How do I get started?

We make sure you can help by matching you with the right young person.

We make sure you are ready by providing you the right training.

A SCOOP volunteer must be at least 18 years old and must have reliable transportation.

SCOOP Matches the right Volunteer with the right Young Person…

SCOOP’s professionals know the background on each child that needs a volunteer.  We know the child’s personality, interests, and situation in life.

The same professional interviews you to learn about your personality and interests and to help decide what kind of young person you would enjoy helping, and which child would enjoy getting to know you.

For example, a mature volunteer with activity limitations would be a better match for a thoughtful child who wants to read and talk about ideas.  A younger, more active volunteer is a better match for a young person who is interested in sports and wants to spend time on the playing field or the basketball court.

No matter who you are, there is a young person that needs you and your special talents.

What is Involved in the Training?

The formal training lasts three (3) hours.  If you need more information, the trainer continues to be available for you.

Training may be in a small group setting or a one-on-one meeting.  In your training you will learn about the program guidelines and information about how to work with your match’s family and home situation.

In training, you will also discuss specific ways to respond to your match and help the young person get the most out of your relationship.

Won’t I Feel A Little Awkward When We First Get Together?

So what’s life without a little “awkward?”  That’s when you begin to learn from each other.  The SCOOP Director will go with you on your first meeting to make introductions.

What Will My Match and I Do Together?

The range of suitable activities is almost limitless.  You can work together, play together, study      together, or just sit and talk.

You should plan to spend at least two hours a week with your match for one year.

You can often fit your time with your match into your regularly scheduled activities.  Walk the dog, mow the lawn, weed the garden, wash the car.  You can watch a movie, have a meal or snack, go to church, or anything you both would enjoy. You may even use the YMCA at no charge, as long as you participate in activities together.

You will discover that Time Spent = Mentoring Magic!
